Ethiopian artists depict biblical stories shared by Christians around the world, interpreting them through a visual language shaped by their own cultural and spiritual traditions. The resulting works are instantly recognizable as Ethiopian, yet they also express universal truths that resonate with believers everywhere.

Ethiopia is home to one of the oldest Christian civilizations in the world, and today more than half of its people still identify as Christian, continuing artistic traditions that reach back centuries. The Sacred Art of Ethiopia celebrates this living heritage through works created over the past thirty to fifty years, including hammered metal processional and pectoral crosses, folding icons, and leather and parchment paintings inspired by biblical themes in the style of traditional Ethiopian illuminated manuscript art.

The artwork on view is on loan from the Bowden Collections, a series of curated traveling exhibitions of sacred and biblical art assembled by Sandra Bowden.
