This bus trip offers Glencairn Museum members the following exclusive opportunities available only through participation in this special event:

  • A visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s new exhibition, Medieval Treasures from the Glencairn Museum.

  • A talk in the exhibition space by curator and longtime Glencairn collaborator, Jack Hinton. Also joining Jack will be Dr. Michael Cothren, Glencairn’s consultative curator of medieval stained glass.

  • A private lunch catered by Philadelphia restaurateur Steven Starr’s catering company Constellation Catering. Hinton, Cothren, and members of the Glencairn staff will be available for Q&A.

  • A post-lunch walking tour of other pieces from the Glencairn collection on long-term loan to the PMA with either Hinton or Cothren.

  • Time on your own at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

About the Participants and the Program:

Jack Hinton is the PMA’s Henry P. McIlhenny Curator of European Decorative Arts & Sculpture. During his talk with Michael Cothren in the Medieval Treasures from the Glencairn Museum exhibition, Hinton will share his unique insights into curating an exhibition. He will speak to navigating the kinds of challenges that are inherent to the process of choosing which pieces to include and why, while maintaining focus on the “big picture” of the exhibition.

Then Cothren, who is widely recognized as one of the preeminent art historians of medieval stained glass in the United States, will share some of the stories embodied in the works that comprise the exhibition, drilling down into the rich details about which he is so knowledgeable.

Glencairn Museum Director Brian Henderson wrote recently, “When the Philadelphia Museum of Art opened its new medieval wing in March 1931, this monumental series of fourteen galleries included more than seventy works of medieval art on temporary loan from what is today the Glencairn collection, then the private collection of Raymond Pitcairn (1885–1966). At least forty of these works remained on display at the PMA for decades, and nearly a dozen can still be enjoyed today in the medieval galleries as either long-term loans or gifts by Pitcairn to the museum’s permanent collection.”

The post-lunch tours led by Hinton and Cothren will feature some of these works that Raymond Pitcairn gifted to the PMA or that remain there on long-term loan.
