2012 marks 75 years since Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn first opened the doors of their nine-story home for a “Christmas Sing” for family, friends and neighbors! That evening Pitcairn told those gathered that he and his wife (pictured here with grandchildren in front of a Nativity which is still featured in Glencairn during the Nativity Festival) were delighted that the first use of their new home was for an event associated with the “peace and happiness of Christmas time.”
Join us as the tradition continues when the Museum, which now occupies the Pitcairns’ castle-like home, hosts the “Glencairn Sing,” a Christmas concert open to the public. The program will feature the “Glencairn Horns,” composed of current or former members of the Philadelphia Orchestra Orchestra (David Bilger on trumpet, Blair Bollinger on bass trombone, Eric Carlson on trombone, and Randy Gardner and Daniel Williams on horn). The Glencairn Horns will play a series of Christmas melodies and chorales that was collected and arranged in the 1920s by Anton Horner, former principal horn with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Other performers include graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia violinist Hannah Jin Cole, who will play a solo, “Meditation from Thais” by Jules Massenet, and then perform “Schön Rosmarin” by Fritz Kreisler with the Sebastian Trio, which is composed of Cole, Mimi Morris-Kim on cello and Renee Warnick on viola. Soprano Jennifer Cole will be joined by her son, tenor Dandridge Cole, in the world premiere of a new work by local composer Kent Cooper (who will accompany on the piano) titled "A Message." The program will also include Pianist Jungeun Kim, another graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music; sixth grader Camryn Buss who will solo on H. Strachauer’s “So Sweet and Clear;” the Academy of the New Church Choral Choir which will perform “Carol of the Bells” by Mykola Leontovich (Arranged by Wilhousky) and "The Angels Sing” arranged by Audrey Snyder; and the Academy of the New Church Hand Bell Choir which will play “The Little Drummer Boy” by Katherine K. Davis, Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone (Arranged by Martha Lynn Thompson). Readings from the Christmas story and audience caroling will be interspersed throughout the musical offerings.
